Thuringia votes: Will the AfD scandals have an impact in the state elections on September 1, 2024? The AfD came away empty-handed in the local elections in June for Thuringia’s district administrator positions, with the CDU and SPD in particular now providing the district administrators. The elections are seen as a mood test for the state elections in September. In the European elections that took place at the same time, the AfD received almost a third of the votes in Thuringia.
After the election, we want to focus on the election result, its consequences and discuss a question that remains in the air: What actually happens when authoritarian-populist parties get their hands on state power? In Thuringia, the presidents of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the police are so-called political officials – and that poses great dangers: future governments could use the security authorities against their opponents. What to do?
We want to discuss the situation after the elections – but also an analysis of the results of the research project “Thuringia Project” with Thuringia’s top constitutional protection officer, Stephan Kramer. This project was initiated by the Constitution Blog on the resilience of democracy and the rule of law throughout Germany and ends with the state elections.
Note: Unfortunately, the exact date can only be announced after the government has been formed in Thuringia! We will inform you on our website deutsches-spionagemuseum.de
